Església de Santa Maria

Església de Santa Maria

This church, located at the highest point of the old town, is much more than a religious building: it is the true visual and symbolic axis of Cadaqués. To reach it, one must walk through steep, cobbled streets, which enhances the sense of ascent toward a prominent space within the village. The current church was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, at a time when the community needed a larger and more representative space.

Inside, the gilded Baroque altarpiece stands out in particular, a work of great artistic richness and detail, contrasting with the simplicity of the building’s exterior. This contrast is very characteristic of Mediterranean religious architecture. Outside, the surrounding square functions as a natural viewpoint: from here one can observe the compact layout of the village, the rooftops, and the sea in the background. It is a key point for understanding how Cadaqués developed in adaptation to its terrain and coastal environment.
